San Vito di Cadore — quiet, authentic, and perfectly placed

San Vito di Cadore is a village about 11 km — 15 minutes — from Cortina d'Ampezzo, with its own ski slopes. It makes a calm, authentic and more affordable Dolomites base: mountain views, walking from the door, and the buzz of Cortina close enough for a day out.

Our corner, Serdes, is the one hamlet across the river Boite — sheltered, safe from rockfall, and quiet. In autumn, winter and early spring you'll often see deer grazing in the meadows right in front of the house.

Lake Mosigo at seven in the morning

Come down to the lake on a summer morning and you'll have it almost to yourself. Monte Marcora mirrors itself so perfectly on the water that, turned upside down, you'd struggle to tell which peak is real. The air smells of pine and fir, the birds are the only sound, and there's a bench facing Marcora and Antelao where you can simply sit.

A quiet day, your way

Take the sun in the garden, walk to the little Polentaia ponds, or pick up fresh eggs and local produce from the nearby farm. Want more? Breakfast or an aperitivo at Pasticceria Fiori in the piazza, bread from the Premiato Panificio Fiori, and the cycle path to the Ethnographic Museum in the old Resinego railway station — opened by appointment, and we know the owners, so it can be arranged.

The Nera is the most technical run in the area — steep, the home of special-slalom races, pure adrenaline. The Parco Neve e Sole is the opposite: perfect for learning, for grown-ups and children alike. Over in Cortina, don't miss Forcella Rossa black slope in the Tofana Ski Resort— up on the Freccia nel Cielo cable car, then 800 metres of descent over three sections, with a breathtaking view over Cortina and the Val Boite. The one thing that isn't in any guidebook 

On a clear night, drive up towards Senes (10 mins from Dolomites Escapes, next to Rifugio Larin and Rifugio Senes) park at the first junction next to Capitello della Madonna degli Alpini, and walk a few dozen metres up the road to clear the treeline. Away from San Vito's lights, the star-filled sky is like nothing else. Romantic success guaranteed.
