San Vito or Cortina? An honest answer

San Vito di Cadore and Cortina d'Ampezzo are about 15 minutes apart and offer opposite things. Cortina is the lively, glamorous resort — nightlife, shopping and crowds. San Vito is the quiet, authentic village — meadows, mountains and calm — at noticeably lower prices. Many guests base themselves in San Vito and dip into Cortina for a day.

Choose Cortina when... you want people, glamour and choice. Cortina d'Ampezzo is the Dolomites' most famous resort — host of the 2021 Alpine World Ski Championships and a 2026 Winter Olympics town — built around the pedestrianised Corso Italia: designer boutiques and famous luxury brands, a wide spread of places to eat from pizzerias to fine dining, lively bars and pubs, a cinema, and a real evening and après-ski scene. If your ideal holiday is browsing shops, long dinners out and being where the action is, base yourself in town. That's exactly when we head into Cortina ourselves — for a day out of the village's calm.

Choose San Vito when... you want the mountains without the crowds — and a gentler bill. San Vito di Cadore gives you real quiet: meadows where deer graze in front of the house, a lake to yourself at dawn, walking trails from the door, and a night sky Cortina's lights can't match. It's small and authentic rather than glossy — a handful of good restaurants and rifugi rather than a shopping street — and nightly rates run noticeably lower than Cortina's, especially in the busy weeks. You still have Cortina's slopes, restaurants and shops fifteen minutes away whenever you want them; you simply come home to calm. This is where you're staying.
